About this book
What happens when a blameless man suffers—and refuses to accept that he deserves it?
In The Book of Job, a man described as upright loses his children, his wealth, and his health. Three friends come to comfort him. After seven days of silence, Job cries out, and their comfort becomes an argument over suffering, innocence, and the justice of God.
Short prose scenes frame long passages of poetry as Job challenges his friends and demands an answer from God. Their debate asks whether suffering must mean punishment, while a poem on wisdom asks where understanding can be found. Jewish and Christian traditions both count this anonymous work among their sacred books.

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A wager in heaven sets the story moving
The book begins with a portrait. Job lives in the land of Uz, and he is upright, God-fearing and careful to avoid evil. He has seven sons and three daughters, and flocks and herds that run to thousands.
Then the scene moves to heaven. The sons of God present themselves before the Lord, and Satan comes among them. Here Satan is closer to a prosecutor than to a ruler of hell. The Lord points to Job as the best man on earth.
