A society girl works as a secret detective
The book opens on Violet Strange, a small, lively debutante. Behind the dimples she works for an unnamed employer who sends her to cases where her place in society can help. A touch of the right hand to the left shoulder is the signal that lets a client ask for her help.
In the first problem, Mr. Driscoll meets her in an opera box. His daughter Alicia belongs to a group of five friends called the Inseparables, and wherever they go, valuables vanish and later come back. Gossip points at Alicia. Violet joins the house party on the Hudson and finds Alicia glowing with love for Captain Holliday, which makes her doubt the rumor.
