About this book
What if charm opens every door, but kindness offers no protection?
Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley leave the same school with very different prospects. Becky is poor, clever and determined to rise. Amelia is rich, loving and ready to believe the best of everyone. In William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair, their hopes meet a society hungry for money, rank and comfort.
Around them gather vain officers, greedy relatives, loyal friends and watchful creditors. Amelia loves the spoiled George Osborne, while William Dobbin quietly loves her. Becky relies on charm and calculation. Through the Napoleonic wars and after, Thackeray's playful narrator turns English society into a puppet show where sympathy is never simple.

In short
Picture a family coach pulling away from a girls' school at Chiswick. A young woman leans out and flings a dictionary back into the garden.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A showman warns you that life is a fair
The book opens before the story does. A manager sits before a curtain and looks out over a noisy fairground where people eat, cheat, court and quarrel. He calls it Vanity Fair and says it is neither a moral place nor a merry one.
He sells his show like a man selling tickets. He lists his puppets as dolls on a stall. The Becky puppet is flexible at the joints, the Amelia doll is carved with care, and the Dobbin figure looks clumsy but dances naturally. A thoughtful visitor to a fair, he says, goes home more sober than merry.

What is Vanity Fair about?
It follows two friends, the gentle Amelia Sedley and the ambitious Becky Sharp, from their school days through the Napoleonic wars and beyond. It shows how love, money and social rank shape their lives and those of the people around them.
Who is the hero of Vanity Fair?
The novel is subtitled a novel without a hero. Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley share the main roles, and the narrator says plainly that neither is a conventional heroine. Captain Dobbin comes closest to a hero, but the book keeps its distance from the idea.
What does the title Vanity Fair mean?
The title names a noisy fairground where people chase money, rank, pleasure and show. The narrator uses it as a picture of society, where cheating and flattery are common and where wealth and titles can matter more than honest character.
