About this book
What happens when the pursuit of big game meets the urge to protect wild places?
In Hunting in Many Lands, Theodore Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell gather hunting accounts from members of the Boone and Crockett Club. Published in 1895, the collection follows wealthy sportsmen across mountains, plains and distant countries. Their pursuit of large animals offers a close look at how these men see wild country—and their place within it.
“Big game of the American West” explores the home ground of many club members, while “Far countries and distant quarry” reaches into Asia, Russia and Africa. Alongside journeys made at real risk, the collection explores hunting as sport, discipline and ethic. Its accounts reveal the habits and values from which an early conservation movement grows.

A club of hunters speaks for wildlife
The Boone and Crockett Club was founded by sportsmen who wanted to protect big game as well as hunt it. Their accounts range across North America and into other lands. Roosevelt and Grinnell edited it in 1895.
In their preface, the editors report the club's recent wins. Members helped pass a law to protect Yellowstone and helped found the New York Zoological Society. They also argue that forest reserves need real guards, just as an army post guards its mules and firewood.
