About this book
What happens when money, family duty and desire pull people in different directions?
In Stories to Enlighten the World, Feng Menglong explores morality, wisdom and human nature through short tales. Merchants, scholars, wives, monks, officials, thieves and lovers share a world where choices carry moral weight. Money presses against loyalty, desire tests duty, and the search for justice brings ordinary lives before those who hold power.
These tales explore the ties between children and parents, husbands and wives, masters and servants. Their subjects include the power of money, the bonds of family and friendship, and the work of judges. Through them, Feng offers a lively picture of Chinese life before and during his own late Ming world, inviting readers to see themselves more clearly.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A pearl shirt exposes a hidden affair
The first tale shows how one small weakness can unravel a marriage. Jiang Xingge, a young trader from Xiangyang, leaves his beautiful wife Wang Sanqiao at home and promises to return within a year. Illness keeps him in Guangdong far longer than planned.
In his absence a young merchant named Chen Shang sees Sanqiao at her window. He pays a pearl seller, Old Mrs Xue, to win her over, and the old woman works slowly, with jewellery first, then wine, then soft talk. Sanqiao gives Chen the family pearl shirt as a keepsake. By chance Jiang meets Chen in Suzhou and sees the shirt under his robe. The sight gives Jiang reason to question what happens at home while he is away.
