About this book

How do law, hidden meanings and sacred song speak to the same search for wisdom?

Hebrew Literature, edited by Epiphanius Wilson, brings together selections from the Talmud, the Kabbalah and Hebrew poetry. This anthology offers a first taste of three streams of Jewish tradition. Move from scholars debating daily conduct to mystics reading scripture for hidden meaning, then to poets expressing prayer, praise and grief.

The Talmud explores how the Torah’s commands apply to daily life, with teachings on honest dealing, kindness and work. The Kabbalah approaches scripture through symbols and secret readings passed from teacher to student. The poetry gives faith a different expression through lines that echo, answer or deepen one another.

What you’ll discover

  • A conversation across centuries Encounter rabbinic teaching that asks how the Torah’s commands shape the conduct of daily life.
  • Wisdom close to home Explore sayings about honest dealing, care for guests, respect for teachers and kindness to the poor.
  • Scripture and hidden meaning Enter the Kabbalah’s tradition of symbols and secret readings handed down from teacher to student.
  • Prayer, praise and grief Discover Hebrew poetry that gives these feelings expression through the form of song.

In short

What do a lamb on the eve of Passover, a lamp wick on the Sabbath and the beard of God have in common? All three fill this volume of Hebrew writings outside the Bible, gathered by the editor Epiphanius Wilson.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

Peace and law shape Hebrew literature

The editor opens by comparing three peoples. The Greek seeks grace, the Roman seeks safety, and the Hebrew seeks peace, which rests on trust in a good God and on a moral law drawn from His will.

What is in Hebrew Literature edited by Epiphanius Wilson?

It holds three parts: selections from the Mishna, which is the core of the Talmud, a Kabbalistic text called the Lesser Holy Assembly, and twenty-five Hebrew hymns and poems. A special introduction by the editor opens the volume.

What is the difference between the Mishna and the Talmud?

The Mishna is the older collection of oral law, gathered by Rabbi Judah the Holy around the year 190. The Talmud joins it to the Gemara, the later commentary. This volume prints only the Mishna part.

What does Kabbalah mean?

The word means a doctrine received by oral tradition. In this book it names a mystical system that describes God as hidden and as shown in ten powers, and it is set out in the Lesser Holy Assembly.

The author

Epiphanius Wilson

Epiphanius Wilson introduces Hebrew literature through its law, mystical thought and sacred songs. Its Talmudic treatises come from the Mishna, the rabbinic tradition of oral law gathered around the year 190. The mystical text explores divine wisdom and mercy, and the hymns include poems by Jehuda Halevi.
