About this book
At the edge of a vast swamp, a lonely young man asks for the chance to prove his worth.
Freckles has grown up in a Chicago orphanage, and his right hand is missing. Poor, shy and proud, he wants honest work. In Gene Stratton-Porter's novel, McLean gives him a chance: guard the valuable trees of the Limberlost against timber thieves. Every walk along the boundary tests his nerve.
The swamp frightens him at first, but its birds and trees begin to draw him in. Duncan and Mrs. Duncan offer a warm home. The Bird Woman shares her knowledge, while a young woman Freckles calls the Angel treats him as an equal. Yet Black Jack and the timber thieves threaten the work that gives him purpose.

In short
What would you do if a stranger offered you the one thing you had never owned, a place to belong, and the price was walking alone through a swamp full of rattlesnakes? That is the bargain Freckles makes in the opening pages of this novel.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A nameless boy asks for a job
Freckles comes down the corduroy road at the edge of the Limberlost, looking like a tramp but wanting only honest work. He hears the men at the lumber camp and smells their supper. Loneliness sweeps over him, and he walks straight in to ask for the Boss.
The cook says the boy has only one hand. Freckles flushes and holds out his empty sleeve. The Boss, a Scotsman named McLean, says sharply that he will interview his own man. That small word, my, reaches the boy's hungry heart. McLean explains the job. Freckles must walk the wire boundary of two thousand acres of costly timber twice a day, among rattlesnakes, high water and thieves.

She is the lively young girl who goes with the Bird Woman to the swamp. Freckles gives her the name the first time he sees her, because her courage and beauty seem too fine for the ordinary world.
