About this book
In the Scottish Highlands, a wrong word can cost a life—and love cannot escape the claims of loyalty.
William MacLeod Raine’s A Daughter of Raasay sets a love story against the Jacobite rising of 1745. Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, gathers clansmen in a bid to restore the Stuart family to the British throne. As war divides clans, families and friends, choosing a side carries a price that reaches into the heart.
The setting stretches through Highland islands and glens, with Raasay lying off Scotland’s western coast near Skye. Here, loyalty to a prince pulls against love, while betrayal threatens trust. Raine keeps the adventure moving with brisk action and clear emotion. The rough beauty of the landscape frames a world where private feelings and public loyalties cannot stay apart.

In short
What would you do if one night at the dice table left your home burdened with debt? Kenneth Montagu, a young Englishman in 1745, faces exactly that, and then a cry in a dark London street changes his life.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
One reckless night of dice ruins Kenneth
The story begins in a London coffeehouse in 1745. Kenneth Montagu, just past twenty-one, sits at a hazard table with the wittiest idlers in town, and he cannot stop throwing. By the time he leaves, his debts demand a heavy mortgage on the family estate and threaten his ability to provide for his young brother Charles and his sister Cloe.
His opponent is Sir Robert Volney, a graceful courtier, deadly swordsman and friend of the Prince of Wales. Lord Balmerino, an old Scottish peer who knew Kenneth's father, begs him to leave the table. Volney sneers that the boy should go back to school, and pride keeps Kenneth in his chair. Balmerino walks away with a proverb about the man who must go his own way.
