From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A rich uncle's will sets a strange test
After the opening sighting, the story moves to London in 1907, where a lawyer reads the will of Roger Melton, a merchant who made a vast fortune in the Eastern trade. The will leaves small sums to most relatives and a mysterious further gift to his nephew Rupert Sent Leger, tied to sealed letters.
The family reacts in character. Ernest Melton, the proud young relative who is sure he will inherit, records every slight in his notebook and looks down on Rupert as a penniless wanderer. Rupert, who has spent years exploring remote places and haunted ruins, listens in silence and then accepts the conditions at once.
