About this book

What can money buy when nothing seems worth living for?

In Millions and The Death of Ivan Lande, Mikhail Artsybashev explores what remains when faith, ideals and comfort lose their hold. These two novellas follow people pressed by money, power and loneliness. Some want more; others already have more, yet still feel an emptiness they cannot name or fill.

Power offers no easy refuge. Those who possess it find themselves watched, flattered and feared, while trust becomes rare. Artsybashev looks closely at lives without firm beliefs and asks what might give them purpose. His direct prose keeps the focus on mood and inner life, refusing to soften the questions with easy comfort.

What you’ll discover

  • The limits of wealth Meet people whose possessions cannot settle the question of how to live.
  • Power without trust See how money and position bend relationships toward flattery, fear and isolation.
  • Belief and its absence Explore the emptiness left when religion, politics and tradition no longer offer meaning.
  • Lives under pressure Look closely at loneliness and the unnamed gap that wanting more cannot close.
  • A blunt literary voice Encounter direct prose that holds your attention on mood, doubt and inner life.
