About this book

Step from a battlefield into a Grail quest, then sit down at an Elizabethan kitchen table.

Chronicle and Romance brings together The Chronicles of Froissart, Malory's Holy Grail, and Harrison's Description of England. Jean Froissart follows the wars between England and France through battles and courts. His account praises knightly courage, but glory shares the page with cruelty, and ordinary people enter a world ruled by nobles.

Thomas Malory sends King Arthur's knights in search of the Holy Grail, where adventures become spiritual tests within the romance. William Harrison turns to the lives of his countrymen: what they eat, wear, and build. Together, these writers offer distinct ways into the English past, from noble deeds to daily comforts.

What you’ll discover

  • War as knightly pageant Follow Froissart through courts and conflicts where noble deeds demand remembrance.
  • Glory beside cruelty Encounter Crécy, Poitiers, and Calais in a chronicle that reaches beyond kings and knights.
  • The Grail's searching tests Enter Malory's forests and strange castles, where hermits explain dreams and signs.
  • England at the table See Harrison's country through its food, clothing, buildings, and changing daily comforts.
  • Three distinct voices Discover how a chronicler, a storyteller, and a Tudor observer each portray their world.

Who will love it

You will enjoy this if you like knights and banners, quests and visions, or the small facts of daily life in old England. It suits readers who love history told by people close to events.

What is Chronicle and Romance about?

It gathers three works. Froissart reports English wars with France, a peasant uprising and a border battle with Scotland. Malory tells of Arthur's knights seeking the Holy Grail. Harrison describes daily life in Elizabethan England, from food and houses to the law.

What is the Sangreal in Malory's story?

The Sangreal is another name for the Holy Grail, the vessel linked to Christ. In Malory's books, only knights who are pure of heart may see its mysteries, so the quest becomes a test of virtue as well as skill.

Are Froissart's chronicles a true account?

Froissart wrote in the fourteenth century about real events such as Crécy and Poitiers. He relied on the memories of knights and nobles, so his figures and speeches reflect what witnesses told him and his own sense of honor.
