About this book

How does a ghost story become a belief—and how does belief send someone to trial?

In Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft, Walter Scott explores why people believe in spirits, fairies, demons and witches. Ten letters to his son-in-law, John Gibson Lockhart, bring together ghost stories, ballads and local legends. Scott approaches them with a storyteller’s curiosity and a lawyer’s eye for evidence.

The stakes reach far beyond a frightening tale. Scott asks how illness, grief and fear can produce visions, and how old customs shape the unseen world. Then he turns to witchcraft prosecutions, tracing how ideas developed by churchmen and lawyers enter courts, where accusations can become death sentences.

What you’ll discover

  • Honest witnesses, uncertain visions Explore how tiredness, illness and imagination can make a ghost feel utterly real.
  • Fairies of the Borders Meet the fairies and elves Scott treats with affection, drawing on his love of local folklore.
  • Old roots of fear Follow Scott through classical and northern traditions, among elves, giants and wise women.
  • When fear enters court Trace how beliefs about harmful magic become accusations with deadly consequences for those accused.
  • Reason without contempt Discover a questioning approach that examines strange claims without dismissing the people who believe them.

Who will love it

For readers who love folklore, the history of belief and Scott's own habit of mind, and anyone curious about how a rational age looks at ghosts.

Belief in spirits is very old

Scott begins by saying that the belief in beings beyond our world is found almost everywhere. He treats it as something natural to people rather than a mark of stupidity. Humans feel that death is not the whole story, and they look for signs of what lies beyond.
