À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Readers who love inner lives, city streets at night, tender love stories, dark comedy and sharp portraits of ordinary clerks, dreamers and outsiders, all gathered in one varied volume.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

Everyone in Petersburg wants to be seen, yet most of them hide. Nearly all the stories are set in a city of canals, damp snow, small rented rooms and clerks who count every coin. The people here are lonely, proud, anxious and often very funny. They long for gratitude, rank, love and a place among others. Let us begin on a canal bank at night, where a shy young man hears a girl crying.

A dreamer meets a weeping girl

White Nights begins as a diary. The speaker is twenty-six and has lived in Petersburg for eight years without knowing anyone. He knows the houses of Petersburg like friends, yet no one knows him.

On a late walk he sees a girl in a yellow hat crying at the canal railing. A drunken gentleman follows her, and the dreamer drives him off with his stick. They walk together, both shaking.

She asks one thing. He must not fall in love with her, because she wants only a friend. He swears at once, though the reader can guess how hard the promise will be.
