Part 4, Chapter 3 of 25 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 3, Beauty Smith torments White Fang, uses him to win money in animal fights, and takes him to Dawson for paid exhibitions and further contests. White Fang remains unbeaten and defiant, but captivity deepens his hatred, while Tim Keenan’s arrival with a bulldog creates anticipation of a new fight.

What happens

  1. Beauty Smith chains White Fang in a pen and deliberately provokes his rage, especially through mocking laughter.
  2. White Fang defeats a mastiff, and Beauty Smith collects money from bets before arranging more fights.
  3. Beauty Smith takes White Fang upriver to Dawson, where spectators pay to see him and continually disturb him.
  4. Secret fights outside town establish White Fang’s superiority through speed, firm footing, immediate attacks, and experience.
  5. Suitable opponents become scarce, and after fighting a lynx, White Fang remains only on exhibition.
  6. Tim Keenan arrives with a bulldog, and talk of a match occupies parts of town for a week.
