In Chapter 34, Song Jiang directs the move toward Liangshan Marsh, but a letter announcing his father’s death sends him home while nine leaders join the stronghold without him. Hua Rong proves his archery before his new companions, and Song Jiang discovers his father’s deception before armed men surround the family estate.

What happens

  1. Yan Shun kills Liu Gao’s wife, Qin Ming marries Hua Rong’s sister, and news of military suppression prompts departure for Liangshan.
  2. Hua Rong separates two fighters’ tangled weapons with an arrow, and Song Jiang recruits Lü Fang and Guo Sheng.
  3. Shi Yong delivers a letter reporting Song Jiang’s father dead, so Song Jiang leaves the company and hurries home.
  4. The nine recruits enter Liangshan through Song Jiang’s introduction, and Hua Rong proves his accuracy by shooting a goose’s head.
  5. Song Jiang finds his father alive and learns that the death notice is a scheme to bring him home.
  6. After the family retires, men carrying torches surround the estate and shout for Song Jiang’s capture.
