- At Rykónty, a French noncommissioned officer treats Balashëv roughly despite his rank and diplomatic mission.
- The French colonel Julner receives Balashëv politely and leads him beyond the outposts.
- Murat meets Balashëv, discusses responsibility for the war, and expresses hope that the emperors can settle their dispute.
- Balashëv expects to reach Napoleon soon, but Davout’s sentries detain him and an adjutant escorts him to the marshal.
