In Chapter 14, Rostóv leads his squadron toward the fighting, keeping fear away by thinking about ordinary pleasures rather than danger. The hussars move forward to support a battery, and Rostóv watches the Uhlans return from their charge with French dragoons following among and behind them.

What happens

  1. A quartermaster brings marching orders before dawn, and Rostóv leaves without waiting for tea.
  2. Rostóv enjoys his horse and the morning while recognizing Ilyín’s anxious anticipation of battle.
  3. Gunfire sounds ahead, and an adjutant orders the squadron to advance at a trot.
  4. The hussars halt behind the Uhlans while troops exchange fire across a valley.
  5. The Uhlans charge downhill, and the hussars move uphill to support the battery under harmless, spent bullets.
  6. Rostóv watches the Uhlans gallop back farther left, with French dragoons among and behind them.
