In Chapter 9, Ramballe and Morel emerge from the forest and receive food and warmth from Russian soldiers, turning an encounter with enemies into an act of care. Soldiers carry the exhausted officer to their colonel’s hut, while his orderly drinks, sings, and shares laughter with the men around the fire.

What happens

  1. Around midnight, two Frenchmen emerge from the forest beside the Fifth Company’s campfire, and the taller man collapses.
  2. The soldiers provide a greatcoat, porridge, and vodka, while Morel tries to explain Ramballe’s need for warmth.
  3. The colonel agrees to receive Ramballe, and soldiers carry him to the hut as he expresses gratitude.
  4. Morel sings beside the fire, and Zaletáev imitates the French words to the soldiers’ delight.
  5. An older soldier acknowledges their shared humanity, and the camp grows quiet beneath the stars.
