War and Peace, Book 15: 1812–13, Chapter 19 summary

Book 15: 1812–13, Chapter 19 of 365 · 3 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 19, Pierre delights in his love for Natásha, fears only that she might reject him, and sees other concerns as insignificant beside his happiness. His overflowing affection changes how he judges people: instead of requiring good qualities before loving them, he discovers their goodness through love.

What happens

  1. Pierre recalls his conversations with Natásha with pleasure rather than the shame that marked his courtship of Hélène.
  2. His only recurring fear is that Princess Mary misunderstands Natásha and that Natásha considers him unworthy.
  3. His happiness makes public affairs seem trivial and leads him to find something lovable in everyone.
  4. He feels pity for his dead wife and regards the proud Prince Vasíli with gentle sympathy.
  5. The narrator describes Pierre’s lasting trust in these perceptions and explains how love changes his judgments.
