What happens
- After his liberation, Pierre reaches Orël, falls ill while preparing for Kiev, and remains bedridden for three months.
- His memories of rescue include suffering, Pétya Rostóv’s body, and Denísov’s news about Prince Andrew and Hélène.
- Two servants and his cousin attend him as he slowly accepts his safety and understands the news.
- Clean bedding, food, solitude, and freedom from demands bring him joy.
- His search for a purpose gives way to faith in God and peaceful attention to the life around him.
