In Chapter 4, Denísov leads his rain-soaked men through the forest while worrying about an attack on a French transport, then receives a dispatch from Pétya Rostóv. He lets Pétya stay until the next day and takes him toward the French camp to inspect the intended target.

What happens

  1. Denísov and his men ride through heavy rain with a captured French drummer boy.
  2. Hungry and impatient, Denísov awaits news from Dólokhov and fears another guerrilla band might seize the transport first.
  3. Pétya Rostóv arrives with Komaróv and delivers a wet dispatch from a German general.
  4. Denísov recognizes Pétya, whose attempt at formal military behavior gives way to delighted familiarity.
  5. The general repeats his demand for a joint attack, and Denísov allows Pétya to remain until tomorrow.
  6. Denísov sends his adjutant to seek Dólokhov and rides with Pétya and the esaul toward Shámshevo to inspect the French camp.
