À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Readers who enjoy ghost stories, moonlit gardens, dream logic and comic dinner parties will love this collection. It also suits lovers of Russian literature and short tales read in one sitting.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

A woman sings an Italian song behind a shuttered window in Sorrento. Two years later, on a Russian estate, the same voice sings the same song. How can that be?

Ivan Turgenev opens this collection with that question. Visions and Other Fantastic Tales gathers five stories by the Russian writer: Three Encounters, Visions, The Dog, The Song of Triumphant Love and A Dream. In each, something strange steps into an ordinary life. You get a ghostly flight over Europe, a haunted bed told as a dinner party joke, a sorcerer's violin and a son who meets in daylight the man he saw in sleep.

A moonlit garden holds a familiar voice

A hunter loves the fields around the village of Glinnoe. Almost every evening he walks past a manor house on a low hill, its shutters nailed shut. The only person who lives there is Lukyanitch, a freed serf with silver hair, who says little and wishes only that his life would end.

One night the hunter stays out late. The moon is high, the garden lies silver and damp, and the air seems to be waiting for a sound. Then two windows glow in the house that should be empty. A chord rings out, a woman begins to sing, and the hunter knows the voice.

Two years before, in Sorrento, he had stopped beneath a garden wall because of that same voice. A woman in white leaned from a window, saw a stranger, cried out and shut the shutter. Now, on a Russian steppe, she appears again, calls goodbye three times in Italian and closes the window. A rider on a black horse gallops past in the dark.

Turgenev spends pages on the garden before anything happens. The dew, the whispering lime trees and the stars tell you the night is part of the story. Beauty here is how the strange arrives.

A beautiful night can carry a mystery before anyone speaks.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Visions et autres contes fantastiques

What is Visions and Other Fantastic Tales about?

It is a collection of five stories by Ivan Turgenev in which the supernatural enters ordinary lives. A hunter hears a ghostly song, a dreamer flies with a spirit, and a landowner is haunted by a dog nobody can see.

Which stories are in Visions and Other Fantastic Tales?

The collection holds Three Encounters, Visions, The Dog, The Song of Triumphant Love and A Dream. Each stands on its own, with its own narrator, setting and mood, from Russian country estates to sixteenth century Ferrara.

Who is Ellis in Visions?

Ellis is a pale, moon-white spirit who appears to the narrator and calls him to an old oak. She carries him across Europe by night. She gives her name but never says what she is, and the narrator keeps guessing.

What is the song of triumphant love?

It is a passionate tune Mutius plays on an Indian violin with a diamond on its bow. He says he learned it on Ceylon, where people call it the song of happy, fulfilled love. Its fire unsettles Fabius and Valeria.

Is Visions and Other Fantastic Tales easy to read?

The tales are short, often divided into brief numbered sections and told in clear, vivid voices. A comic dinner party story, a moonlit ghost tale and an old Italian manuscript each give you a different, approachable way into Turgenev's world.
