In Chapter 36, Lucy discovers that religious objections stand behind Paul Emanuel's withdrawal, and she defends her Protestant beliefs against efforts to convert her. Père Silas gains permission to guide her religious instruction, but neither books nor ceremonies persuade her, while Paul comes to acknowledge the sincerity they share.

What happens

  1. Paul becomes distant after offering Lucy a brotherly friendship, and he lets their usual evening lesson pass without speaking to her.
  2. Lucy finds a Catholic tract by Père Silas, recognizes Paul's inscription, and connects his coldness with religious pressure.
  3. Sylvie brings Paul into the classroom, where he admits placing the tract and fearing Lucy's Protestant beliefs.
  4. Lucy explains her faith and her respect for three Protestant congregations, easing some of Paul's suspicions.
  5. With Madame Beck's permission, Père Silas offers religious books, charitable examples, and ceremonies, but Lucy remains unconvinced.
  6. Lucy firmly rejects conversion, and Paul answers that sincere believers share God's love and a common prayer.
