Villette, Chapter 21 summary

Chapter 21 of 42 · 28 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 21, Lucy Snowe returns to Madame Beck’s school, struggles with separation from the Brettons, and receives the letter Graham promises her. She treasures it without reading it, while M. Emanuel’s intrusive questions, classroom anger, and gestures of kindness complicate her joyful return to ordinary work.

What happens

  1. Graham escorts Lucy back to school after a delayed departure and promises to write when she admits her loneliness.
  2. Lucy imagines Reason forbidding emotional expression and Imagination offering comfort, then prepares herself for work the next morning.
  3. M. Emanuel finds Lucy crying, questions her insistently, and finally leaves her to weep alone.
  4. Lucy teases Ginevra Fanshawe with an invented account of Graham’s jealousy, privately remembering his actual calm.
  5. A fortnight passes before M. Emanuel delivers Graham’s letter, which Lucy locks away unread as a precious possession.
  6. After raging at the class, M. Emanuel offers Lucy his handkerchief, softens, then resents her playful handling of it.
