Chapter 46 of 68 · 14 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 46, Amelia rejects Mr. Osborne’s offer to support her and make Georgy his heir if the boy lives with him, but her family’s worsening poverty challenges her refusal. After selling her shawl and facing her mother’s accusations, she believes that keeping Georgy sacrifices his prospects and her father’s comfort.

What happens

  1. Amelia carefully supports Georgy’s schooling, while Mr. Clapp remains loyal to her father despite his lost wealth.
  2. Jane Osborne longs to see Georgy, and visits arranged through the Dobbins bring him into contact with his grandfather.
  3. Mr. Osborne offers Georgy an inheritance and Amelia an allowance, but she angrily rejects the condition that they live apart.
  4. Mr. Sedley’s speculation and missing payments from Jos leave the household struggling with unpaid bills and insufficient food.
  5. Amelia sells Dobbin’s shawl for twenty guineas and buys Georgy books, intending also to cover clothes, school fees, and her father’s needs.
  6. Mrs. Sedley condemns the purchases, and Amelia surrenders her money and begins to regard her refusal as selfish.
