Vanity Fair, Chapter 37 summary
Chapter 37 of 68 · 25 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 37, Rawdon Crawley and Rebecca maintain their fashionable London household through unpaid suppliers, while Rebecca seeks social acceptance and leaves their son largely to others. Rawdon’s affection for the child contrasts with his shrinking place in Rebecca’s life, and a park meeting brings him into contact with Mr. Sedley and Georgy.
What happens
- Charles Raggles rents his furnished house to the Crawleys, whose unpaid expenses ruin him and send him to prison.
- Rebecca attracts important men but faces rejection from women, and she hopes Lady Jane can secure her social acceptance.
- A conciliatory letter helps repair relations with Pitt, though he offers friendship rather than a share of his inheritance.
- Rebecca requests a female companion, charms Lord Steyne, and increasingly frees Rawdon from attending her gatherings.
- Rawdon secretly cherishes their neglected son, playing with him and taking him riding on Lord Southdown’s gift pony.
- In the park, Rawdon meets Mr. Sedley and Georgy, whom he seats behind his own son on the pony.
