Readers who enjoy conversational sermons, Christian mysticism and deep questions about forgiveness, prayer and suffering will love this book. It also appeals to those drawn to a gentler, bolder vision of God.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Picture a road to Capernaum. The disciples have been arguing about who is greatest. Jesus sits in a house, lifts a small child into his arms, and says that whoever welcomes such a child welcomes him, and the one who sent him. What if that child is a picture of God himself?
Unspoken Sermons gathers three series of sermons by George MacDonald, the Scottish minister, novelist and poet who died in 1905. He wrote against the stern, punishing God he heard in the preaching of his day, and for the Father he found in the face of Jesus. You will meet a purifying fire, a white stone with a secret name, a rich young man who walks away sad, and a Job who falls silent.

God is childlike, and so are we
MacDonald opens with Jesus taking a child into his arms in Capernaum. The lesson is not only against ambition. If receiving the child means receiving Jesus, and receiving Jesus means receiving the Father, then the child shows what the Father is like.
He works through the chain step by step. Jesus makes God known. The child reveals Jesus through the likeness they share. So God is childlike. MacDonald offers this not as strict logic but as something to be seen. The child is chosen for childhood, and love is the common nature of both Father and Son.
This runs against the image he hated, a king on a throne guarding his own glory and hurling thunderbolts. A peasant who loves his sheep and his children, he says, is a truer likeness of God. So you can come to God in emptiness, with nothing to offer, because he is your home.
God is childlike love, so come to him as a child.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Sermons non prononcés, première, deuxième et troisième séries
What is Unspoken Sermons about?
It is a collection of sermons in three series by George MacDonald. Each begins with scripture and develops teachings about a loving Father, whose fire purifies, whose forgiveness heals, and whose children are called to obey.
What does a consuming fire mean in MacDonald's sermon?
He reads it as God's love, not his cruelty. The fire burns away selfishness and falsehood so that what is true remains. Those who welcome it find it purifying, and those who resist it face a harder burning.
Why does MacDonald reject the word adoption?
He argues that people are already God's children by creation in his image, so a Father cannot adopt his own child. For him the Greek word means being placed as a son, which we grow into by choosing God's will.
Is Unspoken Sermons easy to follow?
Each sermon opens with scripture and moves through clear stages, with scenes, conversations and everyday examples such as a father and son. MacDonald writes warmly and directly, so you can read one sermon at a time.
What is the main message of the book?
God is a good Father who wants his children to become like him. The way there is not holding the right theory but trusting him, forgiving, loving your neighbour and doing what Jesus tells you.
