De quoi parle ce livre ?

Under the Rebel's Reign is an adventure novel by Charles Neufeld, who died in 1918. It follows George Helmar, a German medical student of seventeen, who leaves his university after a duel and sets out for Egypt with two friends. The country is on the edge of a rebellion led by Arabi Pasha, and the story is set in the year 1882.

The book gives you a fast tour of the Danube, the Black Sea, Alexandria, Cairo and the desert roads. You meet a loyal friend, a faithful Arab merchant, a nurse with a hidden power and a schemer who will not let go of an old grudge. Chases, sieges, prisons and battles come one after another, and each chapter ends on a turn that pulls you forward.

Neufeld writes with a clear sense of right and wrong, and he lets his hero test his courage again and again. Let us begin where it all starts, in a student club in Königsberg, with a quarrel that changes one young man's life.

Point clé 1 sur 11

A duel changes everything

The story opens at the debating society of the University of Königsberg. Osterberg, a theology student, gives a fine speech, and the bully John Landauer sneers at it loudly. Landauer is a skilled swordsman, and he knows that Osterberg cannot answer with a duel because of his studies.

At the club rooms, Landauer snatches Osterberg's cap and throws it down as a challenge. George Helmar, a quiet seventeen-year-old who has worked hard at medicine, steps in and slaps the bully across the face. The students fear for him, since nobody knows what he can do with a sword.

Helmar grew up in the country, where his father is a doctor. He rode, ran, shot and fenced as a boy, so he is far fitter than the city-bred Landauer. At the duel on a cold, bleak common, Dr. Hertz watches him with growing admiration.

Helmar lets his opponent tire himself out and then wins with one cut. Landauer falls badly wounded. Helmar feels no pride at all, and the chapter ends with him fearing that he has killed a man.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
