Résumé de Sous le poirier
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
Readers who like crime stories with a human face, sharp portraits of village characters, dry humour and a quiet study of conscience will find all of it here, set in the marshes of old Prussia.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Under the Pear Tree is a short novel by Theodor Fontane, first published in 1885. It is set in the Oderbruch, a flat river marsh east of Berlin, in the early 1830s. Fontane takes the plot of a crime story and turns it into a portrait of a whole village. At its centre stands Abel Hradscheck, a charming innkeeper with debts he cannot pay and a wife who longs for a fine home. Around them gather farmers, a pastor, a judge, a constable and an old woman who sees more than she should.
You get a lively tale of money, fear and suspicion, and you get a picture of village life as well: the bowling alley, the card games, the gossip, the sermons and the rhymes sung behind a man's back. You also get a close look at how guilt and old superstition work on a clever man who believes he is above both. Let us begin with the inn on the village street, the pear tree in its garden, and the debts that press on the man who owns them.

A fine house built on debt
The story opens in Tschechin, a large and prosperous village in the Oderbruch. Abel Hradscheck has run an inn and general store there since around Michaelmas of 1820. From the street all looks well. A wagon of rapeseed leaves for the oil mill, barrels of oil stand stacked in the hallway, and the garden behind the house is ripening its pears. Yet Hradscheck walks among his flower beds doing sums in his head and asking himself how much longer all this will be his.
The house tells the real story. His wife Ursel, who grew up near Hildesheim, has filled the sitting room with pale blue satin sofas, a white pier mirror and a small piano. These things are far above a village shopkeeper's means, and she pressed her husband to buy them at a bankruptcy sale. She is proud, careful about her appearance and terrified of poverty. She was brought into the Protestant church by the pastor, Eccelius, and still keeps an old rosary and a blessed image of the Virgin.
Hradscheck, for his part, plays cards and dice, drinks heavy Hungarian wine with the farmers in his wine room, and cannot make the business pay. He owes money to the oil dealer Leist and to a Krakow firm whose traveling salesman comes every November. A quarter lottery ticket stands on his desk like a holy object, and when no number wins he tears it up and watches the scraps blow toward the church. He half believes in luck and half laughs at it.
The couple argue about her airs and his failures, and neither wins. She says she did not chase him, and he says her refinement has cost him dearly. Yet they are bound together by their past, and by the fear of being laughed at by the very neighbours they envy. That shared fear is what makes them dangerous.
