Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Chapter 30 summary

Chapter 30 of 45 · Volume 2 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 30, Tom and other St. Clare servants enter a slave depot, where Susan and Emmeline also await sale and fear separation. At the auction, Mr. Legree buys Tom and Emmeline, while another man buys Susan, exposing how commercial profit overrides family bonds, religious principles, and human dignity.

What happens

  1. Tom and the other St. Clare servants enter Mr. Skeggs’s depot, where forced merriment masks distress and Sambo provokes Adolph into fighting.
  2. Mr. Skeggs punishes Tom and Adolph without investigating the fight.
  3. Susan and Emmeline spend the night fearing separation, discussing faith, and planning how to attract a respectable buyer.
  4. Mr. Skeggs orders Emmeline to restore her curls because they increase her price, defeating Susan’s effort to make her look plain.
  5. At the auction, Alf buys Adolph, and the brutal stranger who inspects Tom becomes Tom’s owner.
  6. Susan’s buyer cannot afford Emmeline; Mr. Legree buys her, and B. & Co. receives the sale proceeds two days afterward.
