Part 2, Chapter 20 of 46 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 20, the Nautilus follows an Atlantic telegraph cable toward Ireland, then turns south while Captain Nemo searches for a precise location. On June 1, he brings the vessel beside the wreck of the Avenger and describes its refusal to surrender seventy-four years before, giving his visit a commemorative purpose.

What happens

  1. A storm carries the Nautilus northeast, ending hopes of escape near New York or the St. Lawrence and leaving Ned in despair.
  2. Near Newfoundland, the narrator sees the Atlantic cable and explains its failed installations and successful completion to Conseil.
  3. The Nautilus follows the cable toward Ireland, then heads south past England instead of entering the English Channel.
  4. After two days of searching, Nemo fixes a position on June 1 while an unidentified steamship appears nearby.
  5. The Nautilus descends beside an old wreck, which Nemo identifies through its history and the narrator recognizes as the Avenger.
  6. Nemo describes the ship sinking rather than surrendering and approves its name.
