Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, Chapter 17 summary

Chapter 17 of 46 · Part 1 · 7 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 17, M. Aronnax watches the crew gather food, hears Captain Nemo describe the ocean as a living system, and follows the Nautilus southeast past island groups. The voyage shifts from scientific observation to horror when the passengers discover a recently sunken ship with bodies still secured on deck.

What happens

  1. On November 18, sailors haul in a large catch, while Captain Nemo makes astronomical observations on the platform.
  2. Nemo describes ocean circulation, imagines independent underwater cities, and asks Aronnax about recorded depths.
  3. The Nautilus travels southeast, passing Hawaii, crossing the equator, and reaching the Marquesas Islands.
  4. On December 11, Conseil calls Aronnax to the window, where Ned Land identifies a submerged ship.
  5. The observers see dead sailors, a mother and infant, and approaching sharks before reading the ship’s name and home port.
