Chapter 13 of 46 · Part 1 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Captain Nemo establishes the Nautilus’s position, and Aronnax traces its route along the warm Black River current before joining Ned Land and Conseil at the saloon windows. The illuminated sea turns Ned’s complaints into wonder and gives Aronnax a new understanding of Nemo’s chosen life.

What happens

  1. After describing the oceans, Aronnax joins Captain Nemo on the surface as Nemo measures the sun’s altitude.
  2. Nemo leaves maps for Aronnax, who identifies the Black River current as the Nautilus’s route.
  3. Ned Land and Conseil enter the saloon, where Ned asks about the crew and complains about their confinement.
  4. Panels slide aside to reveal illuminated underwater windows, and the companions spend two hours watching marine animals.
  5. The panels close, and Aronnax checks the instruments before dining, reading, writing, and sleeping as the vessel follows the current.
