In Chapter 9, Platt remains bound in painful heat until William Ford releases him, while Chapin guards against another attack by Tibeats. After Tibeats hires him to Peter Tanner, Platt encounters religious arguments for whipping and secretly frees three men from stocks, linking their suffering to his own.

What happens

  1. Platt stands bound throughout the hot day, and Rachel brings him water while Chapin watches the road.
  2. Ford arrives at sunset and cuts Platt free; enslaved companions offer food, comfort, and accounts of the day.
  3. Chapin gives Platt shelter in the main house because he fears Tibeats might return to kill him.
  4. After the weaving house is finished, Tibeats hires Platt to Peter Tanner, where he works under Myers.
  5. Tanner uses a Bible reading to justify whipping, then locks Warner, Will, and Major in stocks before leaving for church.
  6. Platt releases the three men temporarily, and they return to the stocks before Tanner arrives.
