Twelve Years a Slave, Chapter 20 summary

Chapter 20 of 24 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 20, Bass promises to travel north for help, while Platt plays at Christmas celebrations before returning to forced labor, punishment, and despair. On a cold January morning, two strangers approach the cotton field, and the narrator pauses to explain how Bass’s letter helps secure his release.

What happens

  1. Bass meets Platt privately on Christmas morning, reports no reply, and promises to visit Saratoga after finishing his jobs.
  2. Bass conceals his purpose while Edwin Epps praises Platt’s strength, skills, and monetary value.
  3. Platt plays music at several plantations, including Miss Mary McCoy’s generous feast and William Pierce’s overnight celebration.
  4. Epps whips Platt for oversleeping, and Platt fears that Bass’s death could destroy his hope of freedom.
  5. On January third, Epps threatens the freezing workers before a carriage arrives and two men approach through the field.
  6. The narrator pauses the scene to turn back to August and trace the effects of Bass’s letter.
