Readers who enjoy wit, tall tales and early science fiction will love these satirical adventures. So will lovers of ancient Greek writing and of old stories that poke fun at heroes and thinkers.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
What if the first voyage to the moon in literature were a joke aimed at liars? Around the second century, a Syrian writer named Lucian sends a ship up on a whirlwind to the moon, where King Endymion is at war with the people of the sun. The narrator swears from the first page that every word he says is false.
Trips to the Moon gathers three pieces by Lucian of Samosata. One is a letter that laughs at bad war historians and lays out rules for good ones. One is a tall tale with a whale and a sea of milk. One is a dialogue in which a philosopher flies to Jupiter.

Lucian mocks every claim that lacks foundation
Lucian was born around 120 in Samosata, a town where the Euphrates bends toward Asia Minor. His family was poor, and at fourteen he was apprenticed to a sculptor uncle. He pressed too hard on a marble slab and broke it, his uncle beat him, and he went home to study speech and law instead.
What he wrote was satire. He laughed at the stories of the gods, at philosophers who wore their gravity like costumes, and at anyone who claimed more honour than he had earned. In Paphlagonia he visited a false oracle named Alexander, who professed to have a daughter by the Moon. When Alexander offered his hand to be kissed, Lucian bit his thumb.
His favourite tools were the dialogue and the tall tale. He tells a story so wild that it exposes the wild stories others tell with a straight face. His target was always the same: false authority dressed in fine words.
Lucian tests every grand claim by laughing at it, and he keeps what survives.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Voyages dans la Lune
What is Trips to the Moon about?
It collects three satires by Lucian: a letter on how to write history, the True History with its voyage to the moon and a whale, and Icaro-Menippus, where a philosopher flies to heaven.
Is The True History a true story?
No. Lucian says in the preface that everything in it is invented. He wrote it to mock travellers, poets and historians who told wonders and asked to be believed.
Why is Lucian called an early science fiction writer?
His True History sends a ship to the moon, describes its people and wars with the sun, and shows Earth from above. Later writers such as Cyrano de Bergerac are thought to have borrowed from it.
What are Lucian's rules for writing history?
Tell the truth, ignore flattery and fear, write in a clear plain style, spend most time on great events, and write for future readers rather than for present praise.
Who is Menippus in Icaro-Menippus?
He is a philosopher who grows tired of contradictory teachers, fits an eagle's wing and a vulture's wing to his body, and flies to the moon and on to Jupiter's court.
