Point clé 1 sur 10

Joan says yes to a free union

The story opens on two park chairs. Gilbert Stanning, handsome and selfish, tells Joan he cannot afford to marry and that they are the right sort of people to drift together. Joan has read many new books since coming to London. She has decided that free love is the only honest bond between a man and a woman.

She has lived in London alone for only six months, and her head is full of theories. The narrator compares her to a child playing with a live shell.

Gilbert does not believe a word of his talk about a better way of living. He wants her, and his touch has a strange power over her. She mistakes the flutter for love. She says it will be rather fun, and the scent of heliotrope comes to stand for that moment.

Joan wants to be free, but she also wants to be held. Takeaway: a bold belief is not the same as the courage to live with its cost.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Aimer

What is To Love by Margaret Peterson about?

It follows Joan Rutherford, a young woman who lives with a man without marriage, loses her family's love, and struggles through poverty, work and the stage before a doctor named Dick Grant offers her a different kind of love.

Who is Dick Grant in To Love?

Dick is the kind young doctor at Wrotham who hears Joan's secret the morning after Bridget Rendle is found. He never forgets her face, searches for her for two years and returns as a ship's doctor to find her again.

What does the Pierrette name mean in the book?

Robert Landon calls Joan Pierrette after the costume she wears at the Artists' Ball, a black version of the sad, playful clown from old French pantomime. The name belongs to a make-believe romance she later wants to leave.

Is To Love set in a real time and place?

Yes. It is set in Edwardian England, mostly in London and the Kent village of Wrotham. The last chapters reach the outbreak of the First World War, so the story is anchored in real events though its people are invented.

What is the main message of To Love?

The book suggests that love is more than an idea or a desire, and that people need honesty, forgiveness and courage to keep it. It also shows how quickly judgment can harm and how much a kind friend can mend.
