In Chapter 3, Alice travels by train, meets the Gnat and its strange insects, and enters a wood where she cannot remember her name. She befriends a Fawn until their names return outside the wood, then follows signs toward what she suspects is a shared house and encounters two little men.

What happens

  1. Alice sees elephants among enormous flowers, chooses another route, and jumps a brook before finding herself on a train without a ticket.
  2. The Guard challenges Alice, passengers offer unwanted advice, and the train leaps over another brook toward the Fourth Square.
  3. Alice finds herself beneath a tree, where the Gnat shows her three unusual insects and discusses names and jokes.
  4. The Gnat disappears, and Alice enters a wood where she cannot remember names, including her own.
  5. Alice and a Fawn walk together affectionately, but outside the wood the Fawn recognizes her as human and flees.
  6. Alice remembers her name, follows matching signs toward Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and suddenly encounters two little men.
