Who Alice is
Alice climbs through the mirror above her fireplace and discovers a world where familiar things behave strangely. She meets talking flowers, living chessmen and people who turn ordinary conversations into puzzles. She tries to remain polite, even when the people she meets are rude to her.
What Alice wants
Alice wants to become a queen because she thinks queens are in charge. The Red Queen explains that she can join the chess game as a pawn and advance across the board. Alice is happy to play, though she would rather become a queen at once.
Alice and the others in the story
The people Alice meets test her patience as well as her understanding of the world. Tweedledum and Tweedledee upset her by claiming that she exists only in the Red King's dream. Alice insists that she is real and challenges their claim with questions of her own.
With the White Queen, Alice is helpful, pinning her shawl and combing her untidy hair. She also questions the Queen's strange rules about jam and her belief in impossible things. These encounters show Alice trying to be kind without accepting everything she is told.
