In Chapter 7, Dorothy and her companions cross two dangerous gaps in the forest and escape the Kalidahs through shared effort, clever plans, and the Lion’s strength. They reach a broad river, where the Tin Woodman begins a raft, but night arrives before he finishes it.
What happens
- The travelers camp beneath a tree, and the Scarecrow gathers nuts for Dorothy and covers her with leaves.
- The Lion carries everyone across a deep ditch, taking the Scarecrow first because a fall cannot hurt him.
- At a wider gulf, the Scarecrow suggests a tree bridge, which the Tin Woodman and Lion make together.
- Two Kalidahs pursue them, but the Woodman cuts away the bridge at the Scarecrow’s direction, sending the beasts onto deadly rocks.
- The travelers reach a swift river, and the Scarecrow proposes crossing on a raft.
- The Woodman starts building while Dorothy eats fruit; they camp again because the raft remains unfinished at nightfall.
