Résumé de La Victime
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers of American history and literature who want to understand how the Lost Cause myth spread through popular fiction, and how a novelist shaped public memory of Jefferson Davis and the Civil War.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
The Victim is a novel by Thomas Dixon Jr., published in 1914. It presents the life of Jefferson Davis, the only president of the Confederate States, as a story of noble sacrifice. Dixon wrote it as a defence of Davis and of the Southern cause, in the years when many white Southerners were building a heroic memory of the Civil War.
It is a work of propaganda as well as fiction, and it is worth hearing as that. It does not give a balanced portrait. It shows you how one influential writer wanted Americans to remember Davis, the war and the South. It also shows how that memory was shaped to excuse slavery and to justify white supremacy. Let us begin with the author and his aim.

Dixon wrote to shape public memory
Thomas Dixon Jr. was a North Carolina minister, lawyer and former state legislator who became a hugely popular novelist. He is best known for The Clansman, published in 1905, which glorified the Ku Klux Klan. That book became the basis of the film The Birth of a Nation in 1915, one year after The Victim appeared.
Dixon did not write to entertain alone. He wanted to change how readers felt about Reconstruction, the years after the war when the federal government tried to rebuild the South and protect the rights of freed people. His novels cast white Southerners as wronged heroes and Black Americans as threats, a view that historians reject as false and harmful.
The Victim belongs to this project. It follows the same purpose as his other work, but it turns from the Klan to the Confederate leader. Dixon uses a romance, with its devotion, honour and suffering, to make the reader love the man at its centre. Knowing this from the start helps you hear the book for what it is.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.

Questions about La Victime
What is The Victim by Thomas Dixon about?
It is a 1914 novel about Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy. Dixon portrays him as a noble man who suffers for the South after the Civil War. It reflects the Lost Cause view of history.
Is The Victim a true story?
It is fiction built on a real life. Davis was a senator, secretary of war, Confederate president and a prisoner after the war. Dixon shapes these facts into a partisan portrait, so it is not a reliable history.
Who was Thomas Dixon Jr.?
Dixon was a Southern minister, lawyer and novelist who wrote The Clansman, the source of the 1915 film The Birth of a Nation. His books promoted white supremacy and a heroic image of the Old South.
What is the Lost Cause?
The Lost Cause is a view of the Civil War that glorifies the Confederacy, stresses states rights and downplays slavery as the cause. Historians reject it, though it shaped popular memory for generations.
Is The Victim worth reading today?
It is worth reading as a historical document, not as a fair account of Davis. It shows how fiction spread the Lost Cause myth, and it is best read beside modern histories of the war.
