The Unfortunate Traveller, or the Life of Jack Wilton was written by Thomas Nashe and printed in 1594. Jack tells his own story as he drifts through battlefields, a German city, Venice, Florence and Rome. He cheats, flees, and is cheated in turn. You get jokes, mock speeches and sudden horror.

Point clé 1 sur 10
A clever page empties a lord's cider barrels
The story opens in the English camp during the siege of Tournai and Thérouanne. Jack Wilton, a page who calls himself a gentleman, has run out of money, so he turns to his wits. His target is an old lord who sells cider and cheese in an alehouse tent.
Then he whispers that the king has heard the lord is a secret friend to the French, sending letters in empty barrels. The old man weeps and hands over his ring and his purse. Jack says the only cure is to give everything away. So the next day cider flows in bowls, buckets and helmets, and the frightened lord begs the king to take his lands.
The king learns the truth and laughs. Jack is whipped, yet the court keeps retelling the joke.
Jack Wilton wins by talking, and a good tongue is his only weapon.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Le Voyageur malheureux, ou La Vie de Jack Wilton
What is The Unfortunate Traveller about?
It is the tale of Jack Wilton, a clever page who follows Henry the Eighth's army and then wanders across Germany and Italy. He tricks, flees, is nearly hanged and meets Surrey, Erasmus and Agrippa. Jack tells it all himself.
Who is the Earl of Surrey in the book?
He is Jack's former master, a poet and nobleman who travels to Italy for love of Geraldine. He was a real Tudor figure, but here he is a gallant and slightly comic character, and Jack borrows his name.
Is The Unfortunate Traveller a true story?
No. It is a work of fiction, printed in 1594 and signed by Nashe in 1593. Real people such as Erasmus, More, Luther and Aretino appear, but Jack's adventures are invented and mixed with satire.
Why is it called the first English novel?
Critics describe it as an early English story of a rogue, in prose, with one hero whose adventures hold the book together. Its long, sustained tale of a single character looks forward to later novels.
What is the main message of the book?
Nashe mocks pride, fake learning, empty show and travel for fashion. Through Jack's escapades, he shows how words and costumes can mislead, and how fortune can turn from laughter to horror in a moment.
