De quoi parle ce livre ?
The Twin Cousins is a children's story by Sophie May, an American author of the nineteenth century who wrote a whole series about a small girl named Flaxie Frizzle. This book follows Flaxie over about two years of her life, from the age of six to nearly eight. She lives in the village of Laurel Grove with her doctor father, her mother, her grandmother, and her brother and sisters. She also spends many weeks at the home of her cousin Milly in Hilltop.
The book is made of small adventures, each one told with warmth and a teasing voice. Flaxie runs from her own party, stays out too late for tea, and plays with matches. She also brings home a great deal of noise and affection wherever she goes. Beside her stands gentle Milly, who always tries to do the right thing. You get a lively picture of childhood in a small town long ago, with its trains, church decorations, doll receptions and kind teachers. Above all you meet a girl who is often naughty and always sorry. The first trouble begins with a party and a message that was repeated much too faithfully.

A party goes wrong in the woods
The story opens on a Saturday morning in October. Flaxie Frizzle begs her stern aunt, Mrs. Prim, for a birthday party. Mrs. Prim is a learned woman who is busy writing a lecture on Ancient History and rolling out pie crust. She agrees, though she thinks children's parties are absurd. She sends Flaxie and her little cousin Milly to invite ten girls.
Flaxie delivers the message at the first house with great pride. She adds a remark she overheard Auntie say, that she will be thankful when the whole thing is over. Milly, who is shy, hides behind a lilac bush and a hat while Flaxie does all the talking. When Flaxie repeats the invitation word for word to her aunt, Mrs. Prim is mortified. Dora, the cook, sits down by the oven door and laughs.
Flaxie cannot bear to be blamed or laughed at. In a fit of shame she announces that she will run away from her own party and that Milly must come too. Milly knows it is wrong but wants to please her cousin, so she goes along. Flaxie does not truly mean to miss the party. She is already wondering what Dora is baking.
The woods grow dark and the girls take a wrong turn. They grow hungry and cross, and each blames the other. At last the two babes in the wood lie down and fall asleep in each other's arms. Their punishment is not a scolding but the long, hungry silence of a party that went on without them. Even Milly decides she has suffered enough to be good for life.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Why are Flaxie and Milly called twin cousins?

Is The Twin Cousins a true story, and when was it written?
It is fiction by Sophie May, who died in 1906, written in nineteenth-century America. The characters are invented, but the book shows everyday childhood in a small town, with trains, village schools and family tea tables.
Is The Twin Cousins easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that matters: the chapters are short and each tells its own small story. The narrator speaks to you in a friendly voice, and the dialogue is lively, so it works well as a read-aloud book.
