A Texas farm boy raised on scripture

Robert Gordon is born late on Saturday night, June 9, 1906, in a farmhouse near Texarkana. His mother, Amelia, is a devoted student of the Bible and hopes he will become a preacher. His father, Calvin, grows cotton on the Red River bottomlands.

A sermon describes believers rising through clouds to join the Lord, and Robert wonders for months what vehicle could carry them. He tells his mother he wants to meet the Lord in the air, and she says he will someday.

Robert will not work the cotton fields, and his brother Ralph mocks him as Fool Bobbie. Instead he borrows his father's tools and builds a bicycle meant for water. His mother suggests thin cedar boards, and the wheels leak and sink him, so he fills them with automobile inner tubes and rides across the lake.

His father calls his dream of a white-winged bird across the ocean pipe dreams, but his mother treats it as a promise. A mother's faith and a boy's stubbornness set the course of his life.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
