The Time Machine, Chapter 7 summary

Chapter 7 of 17 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 7, the narrator discovers that his Time Machine is missing and spends the night searching in terror before finding signs that suggest it is inside the sphinx’s hollow pedestal. Unable to open the bronze panels or gain help from the little people, he chooses patience, language learning, and exploration instead.

What happens

  1. The narrator sees that his machine is missing and rushes downhill, fearing permanent separation from his own age.
  2. He searches wildly through the night and frightens the sleeping little people by demanding help.
  3. Morning restores his self-control, and marks in the grass lead him to suspect the sphinx’s hollow bronze pedestal.
  4. The little people react with offense and horror when he asks them to approach or open the pedestal.
  5. He unsuccessfully pounds the panels, then decides to observe the unfamiliar world instead of attacking the obstacle.
  6. Over the next day or two, relations improve as he studies the people’s language and explores near his arrival place.
