Chapter 11 of 17 · 10 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 11, the narrator explores a ruined museum with Weena and finds an iron bar, working matches, and camphor after hearing Morlocks in a dark gallery. These supplies restore his confidence, and he proposes sleeping outdoors beside a fire before trying to recover the Time Machine.

What happens

  1. The narrator and Weena reach the ruined palace around noon and discover museum galleries filled with decaying exhibits.
  2. Weena grows frightened in a descending machinery gallery, where footprints and noises suggest Morlocks nearby.
  3. The narrator breaks a lever from a machine to use as a weapon and leaves the dark gallery with Weena.
  4. After passing ruined books, he discovers working matches and camphor in sealed containers and celebrates his new protection.
  5. He keeps his iron bar rather than other weapons, but two apparent dynamite cartridges prove useless when tested.
  6. Near sunset, they rest in a grassy courtyard, and he proposes a night beside a fire and an attempt to retrieve his machine.
