The plot in six lines
At dinner in Richmond, the Time Traveller argues that time is a fourth dimension, demonstrates a vanishing model, and later returns to tell his guests about his journey.
He travels far into the future, arrives beside a white sphinx, and meets the Eloi, whose comfortable lives seem at first to suggest that humanity has conquered hardship.
He saves Weena from drowning and becomes her friend, but her fear of darkness and the disappearance of his means of return unsettle his hopeful explanation.
He discovers the underground Morlocks, suspects that humanity has divided along class lines, and descends into a well to seek his way home.
The Time Traveller escapes from the Morlocks, travels further into the future to see a dying Earth beneath a swollen red sun, then returns to tell his tale.
The next day, the Time Traveller sets off again and does not come back, leaving the narrator waiting and uncertain whether he will ever return.
Themes
Class division: The Eloi and the Morlocks suggest how divisions between the comfortable and the working poor could transform humanity in body and mind.
Evolution: The Time Traveller interprets the future peoples as evidence that changing conditions can weaken human intelligence and strength rather than improve them.
Knowledge and doubt: The Time Traveller repeatedly revises his explanations, showing how observation challenges certainty and how hope can influence what a person sees.
Progress: The apparent paradise raises doubts about whether comfort alone improves humanity, placing effort, curiosity and fairness against passive ease.
Friendship: Weena's companionship gives the Time Traveller a personal connection to the future, contrasting with his broader explanations of its peoples.

A two-week plan
- Day oneRead the 15-minute summary of The Time Machine from start to finish, then tell the story back to yourself in five sentences.
- Days two to threeA dinner argument about the fourth dimension: Notice how the guests' doubt makes the opening argument a test of evidence and belief.
- Day fourThe machine carries him far into the future: Follow how changing sights and physical sensations make the journey feel concrete.
- Day fiveThe Eloi live in a gentle, empty paradise: Watch how the Eloi's apparent happiness conflicts with their limited curiosity and fear of darkness.
- Day sixThe machine vanishes and the dark below stirs: Mark how the missing means of return forces the Time Traveller to reconsider appearances and power.
- Day sevenThe tale is about class and where it could lead: Notice how explanations about class and evolution remain theories rather than certain accounts.
- Day eightA tale within a tale, told with plain care: Watch how the dinner frame, ordinary details and changing symbols sustain both belief and doubt.
- Day nineThe cast: the Time Traveller, Weena, the Eloi, the Morlocks and the Narrator. Write one line on what each of them wants.
- Day tenThemes: Class division; Evolution; Knowledge and doubt; Progress; Friendship. Pick one moment in the story for each.
- Day elevenForm: study how the story is told: the narrator, the order of events and the settings.
- Day twelvePractice: plan and write an essay on one theme, then read your argument back and test it against the story.
- Day thirteenPractice: try a second question with a different focus, such as a character or the form.
- Day fourteenRecap: reread your notes and the summary, say the plot out loud once, then rest.
