The Three Musketeers, Chapter 48 summary

Chapter 48 of 68 · 19 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 48, the four friends send warnings about Milady and the threat to Buckingham, using servants and money from D’Artagnan’s diamond to keep their involvement hidden. Athos reveals that Milady is his wife, and both messengers return with replies that ease the friends’ fear without explaining what action their correspondents take.

What happens

  1. The friends debate which servants can carry secret letters safely, and Athos reveals that he is Milady’s husband.
  2. Aramis writes a warning to Lord de Winter and a coded message to his supposed cousin in Tours.
  3. The friends divide the diamond money, choose Bazin and Planchet, and promise payment partly upon their return.
  4. D’Artagnan privately instructs Planchet to warn Lord de Winter that Buckingham faces assassination.
  5. Bazin returns with Marie Michon’s guarded reply, but waiting for Planchet makes D’Artagnan increasingly afraid.
  6. Planchet arrives exactly on time with a brief reassuring note, which Athos burns after the friends read it.
