In Chapter 22, Anne of Austria appears at the city ball with all twelve diamond studs, defeating the cardinal’s attempt to make the king suspect her. D’Artagnan watches her triumph from the crowd, receives a ring in secret, and follows Mme. Bonacieux’s instructions to seek a note at home.

What happens

  1. City officials prepare the Hôtel de Ville, post guards, and welcome the royal guests to the ball.

  3. The cardinal gives the king two studs, but the queen appears wearing twelve and dances in the ballet.
  4. After counting the queen’s studs, the king challenges the cardinal, who claims the extra two are a gift.
  5. Mme. Bonacieux guides D’Artagnan into a dark closet, where a hand reaches through a tapestry and leaves him a ring.
