De quoi parle ce livre ?
A woman's severed braid, a witch's tale told in the dark, and a fear with no name: that is what one rainy-spring whim buys Roger Locke. The Thing from the Lake, by Eleanor M. Ingram, is set just after the First World War. Roger is a lame New York composer of popular songs who buys a run-down Connecticut farm. A hidden woman speaks to him only at night, and something monstrous presses at his window. Downstairs, a sunny young marriage blooms.

A house that begs to be bought
Roger Locke sits in his car in a gray spring rain, outside a boxlike farmhouse in Connecticut. An agent calls it a bargain, with an orchard and a five-acre lake. Roger feels the house is crying out for rescue, and he decides to buy it before he has even gone inside.
That evening he drives out to sleep there. As he steps onto the veranda, he hears a sound from the lake, like thick lips smacking or a soft body pulling itself out of mud.
Inside, the air smells clean and faintly of cedar. He walks through every room and falls asleep in an old four-poster, feeling welcome. The beginning is so ordinary that what follows lands all the sharper.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
